If you were lucky enough to catch Tig Notaro’s comedy show at the State Theatre on Friday night, you got to experience one hottest comedians on the scene today.
Throughout her performance, Notaro engaged the audience. She asked what they thought of her short hairdo (which she just growing yesterday); if they were prepared to give her a standing ovation at the end of her set; how long she should sit, uncomfortably, in her stool. She even asked a member of the audience to come up and help remove her from the stool (OK, it wasn’t just anyone, it was Kirk Fox, who opened for Rosie O’Donnell on Thursday.)
If you make friends with Tig Notaro, beware of one thing. She likes to send spontaneous text messages to her “friends” asking them “what’s your ETA” as if they had an important appointment. She gives them time to rifle through their calendar books or iPhones before writing, “we’re all here, waiting for you” and then doesn’t correspond with that “friend” for months. “It gives them heart attacks,” jokes Notaro.
Oh, and know this about Notaro. She’s not afraid to talk about her breasts, on stage. They were small even before her mastectomy. She jokes that her breast may have taken offense at all the on-stage ribbing and perhaps threatened to kill her. Hence, the mastectomy.
